** Since 2014 nearly 120,000 Detroit households (approximately 300,000 people) have experienced water shut offs. “These are Detroit citizens that are either disabled, unemployed, or the working poor that cannot meet the high, increasing costs of water in the city of Detroit,” Cecily McClellan, founder of We the People of Detroit. “We have identified a direct correlation between areas of Detroit with some of the highest rates of COVID-19 cases per capita and those that experience the most water shutoffs,” said Monica Lewis-Patrick, president and CEO of We the People of Detroit. WPD manages an emergency water hotline, supervises water stations, and delivers water to Detroit households in need. The organization’s volunteers play a critical role in building water justice.

We the People of Detroit is a community-based grassroots organization that aims to inform, educate, and empower Detroit residents on imperative issues surrounding civil rights, land, water, education, and the democratic process in order to improve quality of life. A collaboration between community activists, academics, researchers and designers; the organization works to aggregate and visualize data about water, land and education issues. The collaborative’s research is produced on behalf of the citizens of Detroit to support community organizing, legal and legislative work.
